A prompt is an instruction or natural language utterance that prompts an AI tool to perform a specific task or outcome. Prompts are the central element of interaction with generative AI tools: the more precise the prompt is, the more targeted and useful the result is.
Types of prompts
- Simple questionsDirect questions that require a specific answer, such as general information.
- Creative instructionsPrompts that appeal to the creative side of AI, such as creating stories or text.
- Technical instructionsPrecise instructions for complex, often technical tasks such as programming tasks.
Recommendations for effective prompts
An effective prompt first clearly defines the goal – such as an informative answer, a creative story or technical code. Concrete and detailed formulations lead to more precise results than general requests. Also the desired style or tone should be named, as well as desired format specifications or examples. Since a prompt is rarely optimal right away, the step-by-step testing and adjustment of the formulation is recommended.
Prompts formulated relevant to the target group – for example with industry-specific terminology for trade audiences – usually lead to more tailor-made results.
