What is a backend?
The backend is the server-side part of a software application or website that works in the background and provides the technical infrastructure. While the frontend is the visible user interface, the backend performs tasks such as data management, processing and security – not directly visible to users, but fundamental to the functionality of the application.
Main tasks
Database management
The backend stores, manages and retrieves data. Applications such as social networks or online banking require robust backend structures based on databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or MongoDB.
Server logic
The business logic of an application is processed in the backend, including calculations, data processing, and implementation of rules and algorithms. Common programming languages for this are Python, Node.js, Java and PHP.
API interfaces
APIs provide data and functions for other software components, such as RESTful APIs or GraphQL, and enable structured exchange between frontend and backend.
User management
Authentication and authorization of users are among the central tasks of the backend. Technologies such as JSON Web Tokens (JWT) or OAuth enable secure management of access rights.
Background processes
The backend also runs automated processes, such as sending notifications, data analytics, or creating backups without affecting the user experience.
Technologies
Programming languagesPython (often with Django), Java (often with Spring Boot), JavaScript/Node.js, PHP, C# and Ruby (often with Ruby on Rails) are common options in the backend.
FrameworksDjango, Spring Boot, Express.js, Laravel and Ruby on Rails provide predefined structures that accelerate development.
DatabasesMySQL and PostgreSQL are common relational databases, MongoDB a leading NoSQL solution, Firebase a real-time database managed by Google.
APIs and protocolsREST is a common architectural style for web services, GraphQL enables targeted data queries, WebSockets provide bidirectional communication over a single connection.
Interaction with the frontend
Frontend and backend work together to provide a functional application: while the frontend is responsible for presentation and interaction, the backend handles data processing in the background. Clear interfaces and structured data modeling are prerequisites for smooth interaction.
